CHAPTER 3 – ZOEY
I’m so grateful for my mother. We’re so much alike. When either of us have something complicated on our minds, we have to analyze it to death before taking any action. It makes her a great salesperson. It’s why I became a lawyer. Needless to say, getting a little exercise does make me feel better.
We complete the three-mile loop, and I quickly shoot Ty a text so he doesn’t worry that I’m not home yet. When I look up from my phone, my mom grips my shoulders. “Okay. I’m not sure if this is what you want to hear, but if you can't talk to Ty directly about this, I think you should get some couple’s counseling.”
My nose wrinkles almost uncontrollably. I’ve never been one to talk about my inner feelings. Even when I went through a long depression after I left Ty. Somehow, I’ve been able to muddle through. I look down at the sidewalk. Kick a crack with my toe.
“You’re not a fan.” Mom wraps her arms around me. Reluctantly, I hug her back.
“He has a therapist, Mom. A woman he’s been seeing for years. It’s how he turned his life around.”
“Zoey. No. Couple’s counseling is different. It gives you tools to communicate.”
I pull away. “I really don’t think we need it. I tell him everything. He can tell me anything. I think we’re good.”
She raises an eyebrow.
Point taken.
Mom sighs. “I love Ty. He’s part of our family. But, if you’re going to make this relationship work. If you’re going to build a life with him. If you’re going to marry him and have babies with him. You and I shouldn’t be having this conversation. You’re the one falling into old patterns, my darling daughter. Put your big-girl panties on and talk to your fiancΓ©.”
CHAPTER 10 – TY
TYSON
It’s all I can do not to faint when I watch Mike Pearson leadZoey to the edge of the patio. My butterfly is absolutely breathtaking. Angelic. She leans up and kisses her dad on the cheek. He helps her arrange her dress, and she takes his arm.
Then she looks up and looks directly into my eyes.
Mine.
Her radiant smile spreads across her face. I’ve never seen her so happy. So sure of herself. In this moment, I know, without any shadow of a doubt, that my purpose in life is to make sure she never loses that smile.
She floats toward me, and I’m smiling through happy tears. We’ve finally made it here. As she gets closer, I can’t help but reach out my hand to her. Mike swats it away good-naturedly and everyone laughs, including Zoey.
Carter, who was Internet-ordained specifically to marry us, proudly presides over our ceremony. It’s fitting, considering he not only was instrumental in breaking us up, but maneuvering it so we’d get back together. He’s a man with many regrets, fuck-ups and foibles, but he’s the closest thing I have to a father.
And I love him, for all his flaws.
Everything else falls away when Zoey and I say our vows. My eyes never leave hers and we clutch each other’s hands tightly. We exchange our rings and just like that, she’s my wife. I’m her husband. Our kiss sealing the deal is scorching. Soscorching, everyone hoots and whistles. The second we break apart, our closest friends and family surround us in one giant hug. I truly can’t recall ever feeling so completely comfortable in the moment at hand.
So this is what true peace feels like.
I like it.
CHAPTER 10 – TY
“I guess it’s our turn.” Mike and Olivia stand, holding hands. Mike smiles and points at me. “You. I can say now that you put a ring on my daughter, as a father who is highly protective of his only daughter, I was terrified when she brought you home that night. A long-haired, bad-boy rocker is not who you envision for your child.”
Olivia interrupts, “Except you won both of us over immediately. We loved you from the beginning, Ty, but the two of you were so young. We weren’t surprised when things fell apart, and I think we both knew that Carter meant well.”
“Watching Zoey suffer for all those years was tough,” Mike continues. “When you found each other again, there were still a few more bumps in the road, but Tyson? You proved yourself again and again. There’s no one else on earth we’d trust more with our precious Zoey. Welcome to our family.”
“Oh, Dad. Mom.” Zoey pops up and the three of them embrace. She waves me over and I join them.
That’s when it hits me. Holy shit, I have in-laws. I actually have parents. I can’t help but well up a bit. “Mike and Olivia, I’m so lucky to be part of your family.”
“Ty, you’re calling us Mom and Dad from now on, don’t argue.” Olivia kisses my cheek. “I’ve always wanted a son and look at what a handsome one I’ve acquired.”
Zoey nestles back into me as we both sit down, whispering in my ear, “I’m so fucking happy right now.”
